Never ever ever lie to a prospect

This blog comes from experience. There was a time in my business when I would be asked by a prospect "how much money are you making?" or "how many do you have in your downline?"
I had been in business about a year, was making no money and had no downline. My answer was usually "oh about $1000 per month and I have a downline of about 50 people." I lied because I desperately wanted someone to join my business and I wanted to avoid the embarrassment of telling the truth.

The reality of Network Marketing is that sometimes it takes a couple of years before you truly understand how to build a business. People do not get into this industry because of a great Compensation plan, a fantastic product or Fortune 500 management.

Network Marketing is a people business. A prospect will join with you because they have gotten to know you, like you and trust you. I had to find this out the hard way by getting beat up enough in other companys. You on the other hand do not have to go through what I went through. I discovered a free book online that taught me how to build relationships with prospects.

Please remember one thing, a prospect will always join when they are ready, in their time not yours.

    I know exactly what you are talking about here! I believe thousands can relate also if they are not still lying to themselves. Sometimes we have to get beat up in order to change directions in life. Hopefully those who have not experienced defeat yet will take your advice and read your ebook. It definitely changed the way I think and has headed me in a positive direction with my online business. Thanks for the post!

  2. Wow I can relate. I was in a company, I asked my sponsor what to say to people when they asked me that same quetsion, he said make something up. I did a couple times and then felt terrible after wards. So I was out of there in a heart beat. Be honest with people they want and need the truth!

  3. Wow, Donnie - you hit home with this one. The first company I joined I trusted the gal completely only to find out she was NOT making $250,000 a year. When clients asked me my first year I felt so inadequate because I was still building, but I just could not fudge... I told the truth, some joined me anyway and perhaps some didn't, but I still felt good about telling the truth and all would be well in the end. And it is... I appreciate you.

  4. Great point Donnie! Two reasons why lying is never a good idea. One, if your prospect joins, they will expect to have the success you claimed to have. You are setting them up for failure and disappointment. Second, when they figure out you have lied, will they stay active? I doubt it. I'd be wondering what else the person lied about. Besides, when we lie, we have too many stories to keep track of! Thanks for a good reminder...

    One thing I know for certain is that I have to be myself to grow my business the right way, much like you.

    When people are not who they say they are, you can smell it a mile away. Kind of like being down on the farm on a hot summer day.

  6. AWESOME post Donnie.. I was lied to in a past company when I was led to believe that my upline was making BIG money. Only about a month later they left me high and dry when they quit b/c they were not making the money they claimed..
